Familiarity Breeds Contentment

2004 V. Sattui Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Morisoli Vineyard $50 The following pictures are in black and white.  Why you might ask?  Well, this wine, and this winery hold a very nostalgic place in my heart.  They evoke recollections of times spent in one of the most beautiful places in the world.  Black and white photos seem appropriate where great, lasting memories…

Hot Crab Dip

Let me just say that I have been inundated with millions of emails from readers asking, no begging me to come up with some type of Easter menu they could cook for their friends and family.  One that was easy and could easily feed a crowd.  Okay, maybe not a million people asked me this, I don’t want to exaggerate, it…

I Hope Your Kid Doesn’t Have Our Kidney Stones

Since the Wild Boar was sixteen years old he has been plagued with kidney stones.  PLAGUED.  We have taken him to the ER so many times for pain management our hooligans could drive their Dad there themselves, check him in and answer basic questions about his medical history. For those of you who have never had a kidney stone, or been…

I Found A Connection

2005 Roxyann Syrah $30 If you’ve been here before (this blog), you know I like to connect with my wine before the cork even comes out of the bottle. Don’t get me wrong the wine has to ultimately taste good; that is BY FAR the end all, the most important aspect.  But I love when a wine speaks to me on another level. …

Fresh Pear and Ginger Crumble

A classic pairing of pears and ginger makes this Fresh Pear and Ginger Crumble a dessert you will not soon forget. Serve warm right out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate treat. Easy enough to make on a weeknight too. Think gooey, not-to-sweet, rustic and textural nirvana. It’s one of those crumbles you…

A Rainy Day, Lost Luggage and Tangled Christmas Tree Lights

Many friends have sent me an email I believe by now has probably circumnavigated the globe many times over.  You know, one of those feel good emails I am always happy to read.  Who doesn’t need a little uplifting in the middle of their doldrums.  I know I do. So I have received this email so often I started to think the…

Chocolate Magnetism: A Tragically, Tragic Love Story of Survival and Loss

This is Borghetti and Mr. Stoli Ohranj.  They have been together now for 32 years. They met in 1976 at Bonaparte’s Bar in Kansas City, Missouri.  Borghetti was a shy bottle looking away as Mr. Stoli Ohranj approached her table. However, Borghetti was put right at ease with Mr. Stoli Ohranj’s deep velvety voice as he complemented Borghetti on her beautiful brown wrapper…

Because I Like It, That’s Why

2005 Keller Estate La Cruz Vineyard Pinot Noir $40 The Many Reasons I Love This Wine; this is going to be deep, so pay attention… As a child I was obsessed with Helen Keller (the deaf-blind woman) whose story was portrayed in the film, The Miracle Worker, and her teacher Annie Sullivan.  I was mesmerized by how Annie Sullivan was…

HI! I’M CATHY.

Hi! I’m Cathy. I’ve escaped from a peculiar Northern California college town that built an underground tunnel to save toads from the potentials of vehicular frog-slaughter. I now live in Mcminnville, Oregon where my husband and I have planted a vineyard, started a winery and make wine in the heart of Oregon wine country. I love mayonnaise, butter and Jewish men. Barry, Jerry and Larry come to mind. Gluttony is my sin of choice. Welcome to my weird and wonderful world.
