Caramelized Chocolate, Banana and Marshmallow Sandwiches

We all have them.  Our Fat Pants.

They lurk in the back of our closet rearing their nasty little heads only when we’ve enjoyed ourselves far too much.

If you make this dessert, the fat pants might have to come out for a visit.

If you are already wearing your fat pants, you might have to invest in a bigger pair of FATTER pants.

The fatter pants will be worth it.

The newer, bigger, improved, fatter pants will let you enjoy these delectable Caramelized Chocolate, Banana and Marshmallow Sandwiches on many occasions until you need an even Bigger, newer version of the fat, fatter pants when you make these for a second time.

Don’t let the ooey, gooey, messy look of these sandwiches scare you away.  They will have you and your family smiling all the way to the stove.

Camping will no longer be required because these will beat any campfire s’more, anytime, anywhere!

Now go get those fat pants on.  You know the ones…with the giant elastic waistband…yeah those…put them on and let’s get to work.

Here’s what you need:  Unsalted butter, dark brown sugar, buttermilk bread, marshmallows, semisweet chocolate chips and banana.  Health food right?

Hello Budda’ Boy…you’re unsalted but I’m willing to give you a try.  Our families might not see eye to eye but I’m curious about you and…..okay sorry.

Place 3 Tablespoons of room temperature unsalted butter in a small bowl.  It doesn’t seem like enough does it?

Add 3 Tablespoons of dark brown sugar to the butter.

Mix the butter and sugar together until it looks like this.  Then stick your finger in and taste it like I did.

For the bread, buttermilk is choice here.  It’s rich, it’s BUTTERY, it’s the perfect choice.  A fancy, fancy loaf is not needed here, I promise.

Take 4 slices of buttermilk bread and lather them with the butter-sugar mixture.  Feel free to eat a couple slices then make more.

Now find a banana that resembles an old beach broad with lots of sunspots.  It will taste better this way.

Peel the banana and thinly slice.

Place the banana slices on the unbuttered sides of the bread.  Just use as many slices as you need to cover the bread.  Don’t skimp for gosh sakes.

Get some marshmallows and place them on a metal skewer.

Hold the skewer over an open flame until the marshmallows are burnt and gooey.

Take the marshmallows, about six per sandwich, and place them on top of the banana slices.  Sprinkle about a Tablespoon of chocolate chips over the bananas but under the marshmallows.

Is this just unbelievable or what?

Put the tops of the bread on and make a sandwich.  Press down a little.  It does not matter if the marshmallows cool off a bit while you put your sandwiches together.

Don’t worry I recovered the escaped chocolate chip over there.  He was not going to get away.

Melt some butter in a nonstick pan on medium-high heat.  More, more, more……….more butter.  Is that a song?

Add your sandwich and cook until brown, about 1 minute per side.

Carefully flip over.  I used two spatulas to make the turn.  Marshmallow and chocolate will be oozing out the sides.  You will be hyperventilating.  I was.

Cut the sandwiches diagonally and serve.

Here’s the best part, you can make a bunch of these ahead of time.  When ready to eat microwave for 15 seconds to melt everything again.

OR put them in the fridge and cover.  Eat the next day.  Yep, we did it.  No wasting.  We can’t waste these.

I wanted to make sure you could see every bit of melty marshmallow, chocolate and banana that you are going to be fitting into your newer, fatter pants.

But don’t despair, eight miles around your neighborhood and you’ll be fine!  I swear.

See, I’ve already been preparing for my fat, fatter pants.  I’m okay with it.  Really.

Last shot I swear.  Can you see the marshmallow?  Make these, you won’t be sorry, except for the fat pants.

Caramelized Chocolate, Banana, and Marshmallow Sandwiches
adapted from Bon Appetit

3 Tablespoons of unsalted butter, room temperature
3 Tablespoons (packed) dark brown sugar
4 slices of buttermilk toast
12 large marshmallows
2 Tablespoons of semisweet chocolate chips
12-15 banana slices

*Amounts for marshmallows, and banana slices vary due to the size of bread you use.

Mix butter and brown sugar in small bowl to blend.  Spread over one side of bread slices.  Place two slices, buttered side down, on plate.

Skewer marshmallows and hold over open flame.  Toast until marshmallows are blackened in spots, about 15 seconds.

Divide bananas between bread slices on plate.  Sprinkle chocolate chips over bananas, dividing equally.  Add marshmallows on top of bananas and chocolate chips.  Cover with remaining bread, buttered side up, pressing slightly.

Heat large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.  Add sandwiches; cook until brown, about 1 minute per side.

Transfer sandwiches to work surface; cool 1 minute.  Cut diagonally in half and serve.

  1. Oh dear, sweet Lord. You, Cathy, are the reason my f%[email protected]&%g fat pants don’t fit me anymore. Not really, I just like to look elsewhere to blame my problems…but your stuff is too good!

  2. Lorena 2

    Ow. My heart.

In the event of my death (triple coronary), I leave my fat pants to you, Cathy.

  3. Fatter pants? Let’s all eat naked!
    This is deadly…deadly deliciously…OMG!
Nice way to make use of leopard bananas :P

  4. You steal my beating heart!

  5. Vonda 5

I do think my fat and fatter pants won’t stand this test. I had to laugh when you speak of fat, fatter pants because the vision in my head is of the fat girl on the movie Shallow Hal when she throws her thong at that guy and it is huge, huge, huge. The look on his face was great. Anyone remember this?

  6. Steph 6

    This should be illegal.

  7. Why do you do this? Why?

  8. I’m glad you showed the picture before telling us what it was. I don’t think I would have looked any further if you would have given the description first. Bananas are usually not my thing, but that looks so wonderful that I’m going to have to try it. And if I don’t like it, the rest of the family loves bananas so they can have my leftovers:o)

  9. Jules 9

yum. i may just have to go get those fat pants out this weekend!

  10. Sharon 10

Holy! Those look good. My husband and I have been making smores every night over the stove after we returned from a camping trip with leftover ingredients. Are we 10? :) In any case, these look divine and we might have to switch to this new marshmallow concoction.

  11. You got smores beat, you got moon pies beat, this might even beat chocolate chip cookies. I’m going to wait and just look, my pants are already stretching on the clothes line, and if I have to eat nekkid my kids will be scarred for life. Dimple trauma.

  12. krysta 12

    Good Lord Woman…are you insane?

  13. Cathy…you are evil. That sandwich looks so tastey and gooey and good. I think the next time PMS hits me in a very hard way I will be wearing a moo moo and eating one of these sandwiches.

  14. Forget dieting . . . it is overrated anyway.

    My heart can take it!

  15. Holy hell of goodness. I’m drooling on my keyboard. I hate you.

(okay not really. I really love you. But I sort of hate you for this too.)

  16. I have no idea what to say, other than is it okay to make these for dinner?

  17. grace 17

that settles it. i’m just gonna wear muumuus from now on and eat things like this whenever i feel like it. :)

  18. Jill 18

    I so wish I didn’t just see this…damn you!

  19. Liz C. 19

Oh Yeah! The gooier the better.

Good thing I have fat pants and fat tops in every size known to woman. With your recipes and me sitting in my computer chair blogging way too much, the future is looking very fat. Thanks.

  20. Oh, dear God. I just gained 10 pounds reading this. Holy Cannoli. Those look amazing.

  21. Chou 21

I did something similar w/ peanut butter, strawberry jam and bruleed mallows for my nieces. They were in heaven.

  22. Wow, my heart started giving out just reading this – yum!

  23. TSannie 23

Oh. My. GOD! Those look heavenly.

I won’t be eating them, tho, as my fat pants have now officially become my thin pants. And this, my friend, is a big problem!

  24. Alisa 24

You’re gonna kill me! Why did I decide to re-start Atkins THIS week? Why??
This will have to go into my file for once I reach my goal weight….hopefully I can wait…

  25. Disgusting and will probably kill me and I can’t wait to make it!!! Holy cow, how do you come up with these things? I’m with Tigerfish– who needs fat pants?

  26. pam 26

I lost it at the old beach broad banana. My favorite line ever!

  27. Flea 27

Oh, girl, you are EVIL. I admit to skimming this, as I REALLY don’t need to invest in new fat pants right now. Oh yum. Stop it.

  28. Deborah 28

Oh, yeah – totally worth the fat pants!!

  29. marye 29

You could dip those in batter and deep fry them to make them Monte Cristos…
    Geez they look good.

  30. annbb 30

    I’M GOIN’ IN!!

Making these after dinner tonight – will report back with hubby’s degree of ecstasy.

  31. Kevin 31

Those look so decadent and good!!

  32. These would be awesome when I babysit the neigbors’ kids! They’ll get their gooe sticky mess on and be happy!

  33. OMG! These are to die for! I’ve got to go find those fat pants!!!

  34. Jeff 34

Just reading this entry caused the left side of my heart to shut down.

  35. I have fat pants in several sizes. It’s moments like this I know they’re worth the shame.

  36. You are evil. Truly evil. I’m not in my fat pants right now and don’t intend to me any time soon!!! But this seriously does look really decadent and diet-crashing delicious!

  37. Mrs. L 37

Good lord, I think I need to get on my fat pants just from looking at those pictures. Looks absolutely decadent and yes, I must make these!

  38. Stacy 38

Wow! Awesome. These have bananas in them, so I’m thinking it would be okay to eat them for breakfast…right?

  39. gizmar 39

I’m already into my fat pants – I don’t own a bigger size – I’m going to the local tent and awning store and telling them you sent me.

  40. Syrie 40

This is absolutely wicked! I can imagine that Evlis would have eaten these on a daily basis!

  41. This is obscene!!

  42. Indigo 42

But I don’t have any fat pants! Should I buy some? Is it worth it?

Ha, who am I kidding. I already know it’s worth it, from those pictures.

  43. If Elvis were still alive, this would be his new favorite!!!

  44. Holy Chronicles of Narnia! Yes. I will need to get the fat pants out. And this post has put 2 and 2 together for me – you walk 6 miles a day so you can support this habit, don’t you. You’re like a friggin’ crack dealer, lady!

  45. Oh my dear Lord above. Posting pictures of crack on the internet is not advisable. See, the thing is, is that I really hurt myself running like a mental case to dig those fat pants out of the back (ok, ok, the *front* sheesh!) of my closet. ;) These are seriously making me want to cry I want them so badly. This is my first time to your site (thanks for stopping by mine! :) ), and you are going on my blogroll right from the get go. I love your writing style! :)

  46. Jacob 46

Holy canole – a grilled cheese sandwich for dessert?!?!

    Genius. Pure genius. Thank you!

  47. renae 47

You are so going into my favorites! I will be blogging about marshmallows soon and I absolutely positively will be linking to you. I am squealing with glee.

  48. nica 48

Lol, loved how you wrote out the recipe, it was a riot just to read.

These look just awesome! Do you think that homemade marshmallow would work just as well? I love making my own, it’s just so much fun to make.

Oh and now I’m thinking of adding some peanut butter into this gooeyness too… Peanut butter and fluff (not quite set marshamllow for those that haven’t heard of it) are so delicious, anytime I see melted marshmallow it makes me want bread and peanut butter to go with it!

  49. I actually need to gain some weight so let’s see if this sandwich can help me. lol.

  50. Christine 50

Oh dear…..I just introduced my 4 yr old granddaughter to banana smores……and now we’ll have to try this! Oh well after all grandparents get to feed kids grandparent food, right?

  51. Diane 51

Oh my god. Can I come and live with you? I’d love to be there when you make these yummy things! That sandwich just looks so scrummy I want one now. I have bread, bananas, marshmellows, sugar, even some butter … so what’s stopping me? I have read your blog too much and my fat pants are on and too tight already!!

I’ve seen comments you’ve left on other’s blog and read your post about blogging “offenses” so I’ve been leery about leaving you a comment but in this case I just HAD to say thank you for the recipe!

  62. Jaime 62

Your title was so funny for this entry I ran up to tell it to my husband. Girl, that looks really good. It just so happens, I’m wearing my fat pants. Perfect!!

  65. Terri 65

  71. This is one of the most naughty recipes I have ever seen … Will try it tomorrow St. Patrick’s day … can hardly wait :-)

  72. OMG! You are the devil!! But I am definitely making this as a camping dessert where I can hike for about 50 miles and chop a cord of wood!

  73. PhilipJ 73

I do something very similar, but i skip teh brown sugar and put peanut butter in the sandwich. also, i just use fluff instead of marshmallows. equally delicious!!

  74. Wow, healthy and unhealthy all in one delicious looking sandwich. My mouth is watering and tummy rumbling now!

  75. Megan 75

You are hilarious. I love the way you document your fattening recipes. I too am not afraid to put on some fat pants.

  76. Michele 76

Looks amazing. I make something similar but with Nutella instead of choc chips. Will try this one tho. Yum!

  77. Delicious! What a yummy combination. I’ll definitely need my fat pants, but it’s totally worth it.

  78. Oh dear lawd…I so didn’t need to find this recipe!!! I can already feel that extra tire settling on my waist!!!

  79. I will recommend not to hold back until you earn enough money to order goods! You should just get the personal loans or sba loan and feel fine

  80. Have no enough cash to buy a house? Don’t worry, just because that is available to receive the home loans to work out such problems. Thus get a financial loan to buy everything you require.

  81. Michelle 81

We don’t get buttermilk bread here in Australia – however toaster waffles or pikelets seem like a good substitute.

  82. Zeke 82

Add some PEANUT BUTTER and you’d be locked away! ;)

  83. awnings 83

Pretty good post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Any way I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon.

  84. Emma 84

Oh my goodness! These would be so good made in pie iron over a fire! Maybe with baked apples for the banana haters…mmmmm
