Apple Spice Dump Cake
Apple Spice Dump Cake is one of those desserts that delivers big flavor with almost no effort. It’s as simple as layering ingredients and letting the oven do the work, but the result tastes like something way more involved. Perfect for when you want that warm, spiced goodness without fussing over a recipe.
I’ve made this cake countless times, and it never disappoints. Just a few pantry staples, and you’re all set for a dessert that feels like a treat every time.
Why I Love This Recipe
- No complicated steps—just layer, bake, and you’re done.
- Big, warm flavors that taste like you put in way more effort.
- Uses simple pantry ingredients for a satisfying, low-effort dessert.

Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy apple dump cake:
- Apple pie filling: Sweet, spiced apples in a can, ready to go. No need to peel or prep!
- Spice cake mix: Brings the spice flavor without having to mix a bunch of spices yourself.
- Butter: Helps the cake mix get that nice, golden topping.
- Caramel sauce: A drizzle of caramel sauce over the top gives it a sweet, gooey finish.
- Caramel bits: These baking bits melt in with the caramel sauce for extra bites of chewy caramel. Can’t find them? Butterscotch chips will also work.

How to Make Apple Spice Dump Cake
Find the complete recipe with measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Step One: Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish well so nothing sticks.
- Step Two: Spread the two cans of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom of the dish.
- Step Three: Sprinkle the dry spice cake mix over the pie filling and gently pat it down so it’s nice and even.
- Step Four: Toss the caramel bits on top of the cake mix for some sweet, chewy bites.
- Step Five: Slice up the sticks of butter into 30 thin pats (about 15 pats per stick) and lay them in neat rows over the cake mix.
- Step Six: Pop it in the oven, uncovered, and bake for 35–40 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling. Drizzle with caramel sauce.
- Step Seven: Serve it up warm with a scoop of ice cream and a drizzle of more caramel sauce on top.

Recipe Tips
Here are a few tips to make this dump cake even better:
- For an extra layer of flavor, toss in a handful of chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for some crunch.
- Letting the cake cool for about 10 minutes after baking helps it set up nicely, so it’s easier to serve.
- Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top of the cake mix for an extra boost of spice.
- You can also use canned peach pie filling for a cinnamon peach dump cake.

Storage and Freezing
Here are some tips for storing leftovers and freezing this Apple Spice Dump Cake:
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days—just reheat in the microwave for a quick treat.
- If you want to freeze it, let the cake cool completely, then wrap individual slices in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag. It’ll last for about 2-3 months.
- To enjoy later, just thaw it in the fridge overnight and reheat in the microwave or oven for that freshly-baked taste.
