Ingredients for Chocolate Bark
Pantry Ingredients
- chocolate chips – semi-sweet, but you can also use dark or both. regular sized or mini chips both work
- white chocolate chips
- cinnamon candies – like Red Hots
- red sanding sugar – pink works too
How To Make Valentine’s Chocolate Bark
Step one: Place cinnamon candies in a Ziploc bag and crush them using the flat side of a mallet or rolling pin. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Step two: In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips using 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted. Mix in most of the cinnamon candies, reserving 1 tablespoon. Pour chocolate onto the cookie sheet and spread evenly with the back of the spoon.
Step three: In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt white chocolate chips in 15-20 second intervals, stirring in between, until melted. Drizzle over the chocolate-candy layer.
Step four: Using a toothpick, swirl together both chocolate layers using figure-8 motion, until satisfied with the design. Sprinkle remaining cinnamon candies on top. Finish with sprinkling the top with sanding sugar.
Step five: Place in the refrigerator approximately 30-minutes, until hardened. Break the slab of chocolate into pieces and store at room temperature or refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Recipe Tips
Be sure not to overheat chocolate during the melting stage as it can easily seize up. Once it’s mostly melted, check it more frequently.
I used Brach’s Cinnamon Imperials for the cinnamon candies, but other brands also work well, such as Red Hots.
The sanding sugar gives a sparkling effect, but you can always use sprinkles as an alternative. Feel free to use another color of sanding sugar (like pink) if you choose.
How To Package Chocolate Bark
Small gift bags or cellophane bags are perfect for packaging up chocolate bark. You can easily find the cellophane bags at craft or dollar stores everywhere. Tie each bag with ribbon.
Wrap as a candy bar by cutting or breaking the chocolate bark in large squares and wrapping each piece in wax paper. Then wrap plain brown paper or Valentine’s wrapping paper around the wax paper. Tie with a ribbon.
How To Store Homemade Chocolate Bark
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4 days to 2 weeks.
Since this particular recipe does have pretzels or other cookies that go stale, it will last longer than other versions.
