Cherry-Pineapple Cinnamon Crunch Dump Cake

So what was I saying?  Oh yeah, my obsession.  Well, other than my obsession with using up all the accumulated boxes of cake mix in my house, I am also obsessed with the taste of canned cherry pie filling.  I love it.  I don't know what it is, but I do.

Now, do I enjoy home made cherry pie filling?  Of course.  But not as much as canned.  There I said it.  Now please, don't send me a million cherry pie filling recipes....I already have a million.

I just love the canned.  Enough said.  I especially love it over New York Cheesecake.  But I don't have time these days to make cheesecake, so this will have to do.

Now this recipe is something lots of people have done and it's called something different everywhere.  It's Dump Cake, it's Crunch's add whatever filling you want let's call it Cherry-Pineapple Cinnamon Crunch Cake.

I love it.

It takes zero kitchen skills and minutes to what are you afraid of?  Cherry pie filling?  Come on, get over it.

Let's  make it together...

Here's what you will need:  Yellow cake mix, cherry pie filling, crushed pineapple, butter, cinnamon and walnuts.

Pour one can of crushed pineapple with juice into the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan and spread evenly.  Pour one can of cherry pie filling on top of the pineapple and spread evenly as well.

Sift one box of yellow cake mix evenly over the cherry-pineapple mixture.

Slice one stick (1/2 cup) of cold butter into pieces and place on top of the cake mix.

Cover the top with 1 cup of chopped walnuts and enough cinnamon until you feel it's enough.

Place in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.  Cherry pie filling will be bubbling out the sides and nuts will be lightly browned.

It will look like this out of the oven.

I'm pretty sure I burned my tongue on a piece from here.  I couldn't wait another minute to have a bite.

Serve warm or at room temperature.  However, I think warm is superior.

I'm thinking whipped cream would be a good idea here.  Next time I guess.

Looks fantastic, but I’m seriously hankering after a SAVOURY deliciousness from you…

  2. deeba 2

Ooooh, I’d like to share some boxes & cans with you. No cans of exotic cherry pie filling here…& there’s no way I’m gonna make it. Will just sit & gaze dreamily at this! Must have been awesome warm…I can just feel it! Am off to check out your post Cathy! Congrats!!

  3. O.K. I just gone done baking cranberry bread ( yes, at midnight ), because I wanted to bake the banana bread in yesterday’s post. I bought buttermilk and bananas, but there were no ripe bananas for the bread… while the bananas take a few days to ripen I was hungry for some type of yummy quick bread and made cranberry bread. Then I check out today’s post here and you’re making canned cherry filling topped cheesecake ! Now my Hubby will need to get busy, that is one of his favorite desserts…he does make his cheese cakes from scratch, but yes….he does use canned cherry filling!

I think we will be putting on a few pounds this month!

  4. You are my personal hero…you know and understand that right? I am but your loyal subject…dang, I am starting to sound like a stalker…LOL

I use to eat cherry pie filling out of the can with a tub of Cool Whip beside me.

Ahh, the memories of being a overeating foodie. At least I can still live vicariously through you.

  5. We make this at least once a month! LOVE IT! Well sans the walnuts (again with the tongue swelling thing), but everything else…oh yeah! I can just smell it baking! The only thing that would make it perfect out here is if I could get my hand on Comstock filling rather than Delite. Comstock is just BETTER. But alas, no such luck in Maine…*sigh*

Thanks for highlighting one of my favs!

  6. Aah, also love canned cherry pie filling. When we made TWD cheesecake, I admitted it then and I’ll say it again now. I’ve never made my own, because the canned stuff just works!
    Love this cake.

  7. Come check out my blog! I made your PB cupcakes! :) And credited you, of course!

How do you eat all these tasty treats without being huge?

  8. Laura 8

    Another- made for Laura recipe.
    I love it.
(Would this be called a “dump” cake in some circles?)

  9. Is this an acceptable breakfast item? Because I swear I’m about to make this (by some grace of God I have all the ingredients!), instead of my usual yogurt. :)

  10. Gorgeous per usual! I especially like your artful arrangement of the ingredient though. 😉

  11. That looks wonderful. I have seen recipes like that a million times but have never made one. Those pictures are beggin me to try it soon

  12. “Cover the top with 1 cup of chopped walnuts and enough cinnamon until you feel it’s enough.”
There is never enough cinnamon. :)
I agree with the cherry pie filling. It’s the only way I can eat cherries, because I’m weirdly allergic to fresh cherries. Only since I was about 20. So very weird.

  13. Barbie with a T 14

That looks so simple and delicious. Cherry for Valentines Day is so appropriate. To me, better than strawberries! To each his own. Thanks for this simple and beautiful dessert.

  14. Your photos are terrific. And a lot of great flavors going on here. Looks delicious

  15. When are you going to write a cookbook? :)

  16. I would agree with serving this warm! And a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Delicious!

  17. Yumm! I love cherry pie filling – eat it straight from the can enjoy:) I have forwarded this on to my baker and hopefully this weekend, I will be enjoying cherry bliss!

  18. Shelly 19

We call those dump cakes here. They are truly divine and easy to make.

  19. My niece said she learned to make this in Girl Scouts except they were told to cover the entire cake mix with butter, thin slices, no gaps. No nuts either.

But I digress. My niece made it when I was visiting her to kiss her first babies head (5 straight mornings, I kid you not!),

I threatened to move in with her and I think it had more to do with the cake than the baby! Um, I do love my great nephew, but this cake….!

  20. Suzette 21

You’re absolutely right. This is good stuff. At my hometown church, we have a series of luncheons every fall where this is the featured dessert. All the ladies contribute one, and so there’s plenty for everyone…which is a good thing, because that’s what everyone wants – plenty! Sooooo yummy! Thanks for reminding me to pick up a can of cherry pie filling!

  21. Only you can make a box of cake mix look so mouthwatering!!!

  22. Kristen 23

Wow – that looks like my kind of obsession! Yum!

  23. tipper 24

I’ve had this before-and it is YUMMY!

  24. I love this crunch cake recipe and it would be perfect with my own obsession – cherry preserves from Bonne Maman. I swear I buy two or three jars a week and even eat them straight from the jar without anything at all :)

  25. Jackie 26

back when you were born, in my younger days it was called dump cake and we did not sift the cake mix. that was about the only difference. Yummy then and now.

  26. Maureen 27

I would love to go along that pan and eat all the topping! I love those streusle-y, crumb toppings. Yum!

  27. You made me laugh aloud at work–and I work at a library! I guess that’s what I get for doing personal reading at work. Caught! I love canned cherry pie filling, too. Oh darn. Now I’m drooling AND laughing at work!

  28. Marjie 29

Thank you! My husband and sons love cherry pie filling from the can, and I can’t stand anything cherry flavored, so this is a great diet food – for me! I love your pictures. Like Jackie said, I’ve seen this called “dump cake” too.

  29. Tara 30

Okay, your Valentine’s story over at One For The Table was hillarious! I love reading your stories, and that was one that I forwarded to all my girlfriends. :) Sadly, I realized how pathetic I was when I related to all your thoughts and actions as a 20 year old….and I’m 27! ha! Wow, I’m such a late bloomer! :)

  30. We call that “Dump Cake” here in the south! :) Love that with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  31. dawn 32

from a cake box? OK, I’m so in. This looks so good Cath.

  32. This is great and I love that you used box mix – that is a great time saver. Of course anything with nuts and butter cannot be anything but incredible. I am with Starwoodgal top that baby off with a big ol’ scoop of ice cream!!

  33. OMG–I’m all over that!! I don’t think I can make it fast enough!!

  34. Psssst: I would never normally admit this, but you DID go first. I also love canned cherry pie filling. And canned cranberries, despite the fact that I would never serve them. Oh, and I know that this is horrifying, but when I was working at the restaurant and I had to refill mustard bottles with generic off-brand yellow badness, I would always look both ways and then lick the spoon before I put it in the dishwasher.

  35. I love dump cake! It makes me happy! :)

  36. dawn 37

OMG I just read your Valentine’s story at One For The Table…that was hilarious. What was he thinking?

    And I love this cake.

  37. vanessa 38

I should really not visit your blog before lunchtime!

I’m so hungry now.. for cake haha

  38. Bob 39

That is the best thing I have ever seen done with cake mix. Kudos to you! :)

  39. We call this dump cake in my house. It is so good with ice cream. Loved your other post. I can’t believe you got a naked barbell! Yes we do put too much on Valentine’s Day. We don’t do much for eachother because we love on all the other days! I do like to bake for the ones I care for though!

  40. Alisa 41

I am scared of the size of my butt! I hate you. No, no, I don’t! I love you. No, I really hate you. No, no, no!! I really, really, really love you. I swear I do.

  41. Brenda S. 'Okie in Colorado' 42

Cathy, my Mom would serve this dessert with coconut ice cream! YUMMY!

  42. If I had one thing to eat before I died – just one thing – it would probably be my grandmother’s homemade cherry pie. With canned cherry pie filling.

  43. Rich 44

I loved your story at One For the Table. I’ll remember to never do anything so stupid.

  44. Pam 45

Mmmmm. I too LOVE canned cherry pie filling, I just wish my husband did too. This look FANTASTIC!

  45. KAYOLA 46

♥ this…I make this quite often and we just call it DUMP CAKE…it is so easy and convenietly quick…

  46. Debbie 47

A coworker always brings this in for potlucks or just for snacking! I love it. It is so good and simple.

  47. Liz C. 48

Mr. Snooty is making the dessert this year because he really out-did himself last year. I requested he make “Chocolate Purses” again.

However, I can make this another time & certainly intend to. Actually, it’s probably going to take me a year to make all the wonderful things you’ve presented us with. Again, how do you do it?

  48. Biz 49

    When can I come over??!!

I heard that Comstock makes a sugar free version of their pie fillings, but I haven’t seen them yet in my neck of the woods.

  49. Ruthanne (in Seattle) 50

I love dump cake Cathy. Thanks for the reminder! I haven’t used the cinnamon before but it sounds great! love that cherry pie filling. . .

  50. Egghead 51

The only thing I can think that would make this even more yummy is a scoop of vanilla icecream. AWWWW!

  51. Rachael 52

Oh…I am obsessed with this cake as well. But, I could eat the whole entire thing by myself so I am judicious about baking it! I also use coconut on mine….but then again, I use coconut on anything I can!

  52. Looks so easy. (and I prefer canned blueberry pie filling over my cheesecake to the homemade stuff sshhhh)

  53. Rebel 54

OMG! How good does that look. I love cherry pie fillin’ too. I mean love it. I can’t wait to make this delicious recipe. It’s also a bonus that it is easy. Thanks.

  54. yeah dump cake! I make mine with canned peaches and no cinnamon; love canned cherry pie filling I’m with ya on that. Sometime try blueberry piefilling with the pineapple that rawks too!
do you already have a recipe for sweet tater biscuits? I have one I was going to share with you but figured you probably already knew about it. Seems like I remember you posting about that a while back. That was gonna be my tater ho down contribution.

  55. elra 56

What a delicious and cheerful cake, Cathy. Love that combination of cherries and pineapples.

  56. tamilyn 57

The Dude walked by as I was reading your post and asked when I was making this. Guess I better get cake mix as my last box was in two pans on the stove when we got home this morning and is now gone. No frosting, no nothing-just yellow cake in a pan. Sigh.

  57. Cherries are not a fave…but this cake. This cake with all that butter and nuts and pineapples. Well. Maybe it’s worth a few spoonfuls!

  58. Mrs. L 59

Dump Cake, as we call it around here, is the only cake that I make on a regular basis. In fact, it’s probably one of the few items I’ve made more than a few times! For someone who doesn’t love canned cherries, I can eat this all up.

  59. Joyce 60

This looks good – I think I will try it. I really just want to be in the draw for the chocolate. 😉

  60. Rico 61

Super amazing crumble speciality. I just love the simplicity of the assembly to bake…really colourful and twangy…loved it.. cheers

  61. Melonie 62

I would love to be entered in the draw for the delicious chocolates, but I can’t get it to let me comment on that post! They sound truly amazing. Love your blog.

  62. grace 63

i’ll listen to anything and everything you want to say if you bait me with something like this! i really like cherry pie filling too…and cinnamon. i like cinnamon. saying “as much as you want” is extremely dangerous. :)

  63. Looks stunning and delicious.

  64. Patty 65

I can’t wait to try these cherry pineapple gems…for breakfast with a hot cup of black coffee!
Thank you for all of the great recipes and beautiful pictures.

  65. Kelly 66

I also call that dump cake. My mom makes it a few times a year and it is really tasty!

  66. Emily H 67

Made this for Valentines Day and served with lightly sweetened whipping cream. Was absolutely FABULOUS and so, so easy and quick. Everyone loved it :0)

  67. bakedgood 68

I love recipes like this. In my house we call it a dumpcake, since you just dump everything into the pan!! I think it looks like an absolutely delicious variation, because I dont think we’ve added nuts….. Will definitely have to try!

  68. Stephmook 69

yes ma’am, as a young woman from the south, i learned to make this when i was a very little lady.
    still my favorite dessert ever
