This Blueberry Margarita recipe is a twist on the classic with a combination of tequila, Cointreau and freshly squeezed lime. I serve it with a salty, citrus rim, and this helps make this fresh blueberry cocktail a quick and irresistibly refreshing drink.
One of the reasons I love this blueberry margarita is that it’s not just a drink, it’s a mood – the perfect accompaniment to a lively conversation with friends or a relaxing evening by myself.
When I sip this blueberry cocktail, I taste the salt on the rim, the tang of lime, the tartness of the blueberry and the kick of tequila all working together to create a memorable symphony of flavors. This blueberry margarita is always the ultimate expression of celebration, relaxation, and pure enjoyment. It’s also visually appealing.
It’s rare a second round is not had when this blueberry marg comes out to play.
Why I Use Cointreau Instead of Triple Sec or Orange Curaçao In A Margarita
Cointreau, triple sec, and orange curaçao are all orange-flavored liqueurs that are commonly used in margaritas. However, Cointreau, which is always my first choice, is preferred over triple sec or orange curaçao for many different reasons.
- Higher quality: Cointreau is considered a higher quality orange liqueur than triple sec or orange curaçao because it is made from a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels, giving it a more complex and refined flavor. I find that triple sec and orange curaçao have an edge to them, while Cointreau leaves behind a smooth, sipping cocktail.
- Lower sweetness: Cointreau has a lower sugar content than triple sec, making it less sweet and allowing the other flavors in the margarita to shine through.
- Better balance: Cointreau is well-balanced and doesn’t overpower the other flavors in the margarita, whereas triple sec and orange curaçao can sometimes be too sweet or too strong.
- Versatility: Cointreau is a more versatile liqueur that can be used in a wide variety of cocktails, making it a great addition to any home bar.
While triple sec or orange curaçao can be used in a margarita, I prefer Cointreau in all situations where it’s appropriate to use it. I even add Cointreau to my mojito for the perfect balance of flavors.
Best Tequila For This Margarita
You’ll want to use a high-quality, 100% agave tequila for the best taste. Blanco or silver tequila is my choice for a Blueberry Margarita because it has a clean, crisp taste that pairs well with the fruity sweet and tartness of the blueberries.
Reposado or añejo tequila can also be used for a richer, more complex flavor profile, but I find they are too over-whelming for this refreshing blueberry cocktail.
Recipe Tips
- As with all margaritas, the base note is tequila and it marries so well with the other flavors introduced here, especially fresh blueberry juice.
- While you can use frozen blueberries that have been thawed, you do lose some of the fresh taste in this cocktail with frozen blueberries. Stick with fresh if you can.
- The lime salted rim is a delicious contrast in flavor and sea salt flakes add a beautiful dimension. The salt works wonderfully with the sweet and sour cocktail. If the salt is too much for you, consider rimming just half the glass instead.
- I used simple syrup to add sweetness to this blueberry margarita. This can be substituted with agave nectar. However, I find that simple syrup lends a cleaner profile. In a pinch you could also use maple syrup to sweeten this cocktail.
- Be sure to fill your shaker with plenty of ice and shake until the outside feels very cold. This cocktail should be served chilled.
- If the alcohol is too strong for you, feel free to top up this cocktail with sparkling water or club soda.
- Blueberry margaritas are best served and enjoyed as soon as they’ve been mixed.

Blueberry Margarita
Ingredients
Cocktail Rim:
- 1 lime
- sea salt flakes
Blueberry Margarita:
- 1/4 cup fresh blueberries, plus extra for garnish
- 0.75 oz. fresh lime juice, 1-2 limes depending on how juicy they are
- 0.50 oz. simple syrup
- ice
- 2 oz. silver tequila
- 1 oz. Cointreau
Blueberry Margarita Garnish:
- lime rounds
- extra blueberries
- sprigs of mint
Instructions
Cocktail Rim:
- Zest one of the limes and mix it together with a handful of sea salt flakes. Cut the lime in half and run a piece of lime around the edge of a cocktail glass. Dip the glass rim into the lime salt and twist it around so the salt sticks to the rim of the glass. (You can juice what's left of this lime to use in the cocktail.)
Blueberry Margarita:
- Place blueberries into a cocktail shaker and muddle until blueberries are completely squashed and all juices have been released.
- Add lime juice and simple syrup and muddle again.
- Fill cocktail shaker with ice and add tequila and Cointreau. Shake vigorously until outside of shaker is very cold, about 30-40 shakes.
- Fill rimmed cocktail glass with ice and add a small handful of blueberries and a couple of sliced lime wheels. Pour the shaken cocktail into the glass through a strainer and garnish with a sprig of mint.
