I made these and fully intended to bring them to a family thing Saturday. That did not happen. My husband kept “just cutting another tiny piece” every time he walked through the kitchen and suddenly half the pan was gone. The cold peanut butter layer is honestly insane.

Okay these are WAY more like Buckeye candy than brownies and I mean that as a compliment. I kept mine in the fridge overnight and they somehow got even better the next day. The texture of the peanut butter layer is exactly what I wanted.

My mom is from Ohio and she immediately approved of these. She usually complains that Buckeye desserts never have enough peanut butter but she went back for seconds before dinner so I feel like that says everything.

I thought these were going to be super sweet but the brownie layer keeps them from going overboard. Also thank you for warning me not to use natural peanut butter because I almost did and it absolutely would have ruined the texture.

Thank you. And yes my aunt had a full dessert strategy going on because I guess she understood the stakes and the social ecosystem to optimize privately, which is hilarious to me now. She had a full, secret Buckeye R & D lab happening and no one was aware they were eating version 17.4. I’m proud her and I share DNA.

Those brownies are beautiful! But I have to agree with you on the dessert culture of the Midwest. It’s real. I found this story very charming and made me chuckle because your aunt knew what she was doing, especially as an outsider. I really enjoyed reading about it.
