I love dessert but who can wait till the end of the day to have it? Not me. I refuse to live that way.
That’s why I love having this shake for breakfast. It tastes like you are having dessert and I am all about that kind of livin’. I love tricking myself into thinking I am getting a treat before 9 am. With this shake, it’s not far from the truth.
As we were high-tailing it out of town on Sunday I made these to celebrate the beginning of our vacation. Of course it delayed us from leaving for about three hours but who cares right?
These Buttermilk Citrus Shakes are a wonderful combination of fresh orange and lemon juice. The buttermilk not only gives this shake a zippy-tangy flavor but it makes it low in fat. What could be more perfect. The citrus zing really gives you the get up and go you need in the wee morning hours.
It is super easy to make and tastes like an Orange Julius. Does anyone remember those?
It is also my entry into a blogging roundup event happening over at Mike’s Table called You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream for Frozen Desserts! If you have never been to Mike’s site you must visit. He lives in Florida and cooks up fabulous recipes I find myself drooling over several times a week. When I grow up I want to cook like him! The roundup will take place at his site on July 7th. Make sure you stop by his place to see all the wonderful submitted recipes.
Anyway, let’s make these delectable breakfast desserts and put your morning coffee to shame! (Okay I will never dis my morning java again. It was a mistake. O Great One of Coffee, if you heard - just forget what I said).
Here’s what you’ll need to bring sunshine to your morning blah’s: Buttermilk, fresh orange juice, fresh lemon juice, vanilla extract, sugar water, ginger snaps, lemon zest, lemon slices and ice cubes.
To your blender add sugar water (1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup hot water stirred until dissolved), 1 cup buttermilk, 1 cup fresh orange juice, 2 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and 2 cups ice cubes. Make sure you add the ice last or you will lock the blades of your blender up. It’s not pretty.
Puree all the ingredients on high until the ice is completely chopped.
Garnish each shake with 1 teaspoon crushed ginger snaps, 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest and lemon slices.
I told you it was so easy!
Now go forth and turn breakfast into dessert. You’ll be glad you did.
