Strawberry Grapefruit Paloma Cocktail
This Strawberry Grapefruit Paloma is a deliciously, refreshing cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. My version is made with premium silver (white) tequila, however, this Paloma can also be made with mezcal for a bolder flavor. The sweetness of the strawberries and the tanginess of the grapefruit are balanced with grapefruit soda. The final drink is enhanced with a sugar or salted rim, giving it that extra burst of flavor with every sip.
The first time I experienced a Paloma was on a trip to Mexico. I was visiting a small beach town and stumbled upon a local bar that served some fairly amazing cocktails. But, as soon as I tried the Paloma, I knew this was going to be my favorite. I was truly an inexperienced cocktail drinker at that point in my life, but I did love how refreshing this grapefruit cocktail tasted. The bartender had added a touch of sugar to the rim of the glass, which to this day I tend to prefer (more than salt), when drinking any flavor of Paloma . Maybe it was the warm sun, the sound of the waves, and the strong cocktails that all came together to create a truly memorable afternoon – but every time time I sip on a Paloma, I can’t help but reminisce about that day on the water.
This Paloma is a nice switch from traditional margaritas, mostly because of its bright, fruit-forward flavors. The fresh strawberries and tart grapefruit and lime really embody how a refreshing cocktail can be.
Enjoy this cocktail year round, it’s the perfect addition to your drink menu.
How to Make a Paloma with Fresh Grapefruit Juice?
Instead of using grapefruit soda, as called for in this recipe, you can easily use fresh grapefruit juice to make this recipe.
You will need to account for the sweetness in the grapefruit soda by either using a simple syrup or a teaspoon of sugar in the cocktail shaker.
A ratio of four ounces fresh grapefruit juice (which can be added the cocktail shaker) and two ounces of plain seltzer or club soda can be poured on top of the final drink.
This is a great option when grapefruit is in season.
You can make a non-alcoholic version by just leaving out the tequila.
