Warmly spiced apple pie filling is topped with sweet, buttery oats that crack under the pressure of a spoon. Don’t forget a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

If you’ve made my butterscotch apple crisp, you know how delicious it is, but it’s also a little more labor intensive using fresh apples.
Either way you can’t go wrong, but if you need to make a last-minute dessert, having apple pie filling already in the pantry is going to be a game changer this fall.

Best Canned Apple Pie Filling
I have tasted lots of canned apple pie filling, in all sorts of price ranges and I’ve found that most expensive is not even best when it comes to taste.
This brand of canned apple pie filling has the best taste overall and it’s easy to find.
I do have a second favorite apple pie filling when it comes to taste, but it’s much more expensive.
Apple Crisp Using Pie Filling Recipe Notes
Looking for a clumpier, crunchier crisp? Melted butter is your answer. If you still prefer big clusters, gently press some of the topping together in clumps before sprinkling it over the apples.
Bubbling on the sides and in the middle is your sign the crisp has completely warmed throughout. Look for them.
This recipe calls for dark brown sugar so it’s not too sweet, but feel free to use light brown sugar to make it a little sweeter, especially if you’re not going to serve with whipped or ice cream.
