Looking for a healthier dessert option? Spend ten minutes making this delicious Strawberry Frozen Yogurt and enjoy every bite, minus the guilt.
Strawberry Frozen Yogurt (froYo)
Is there a big difference between frozen yogurt and ice cream? Yes there is! In fact, they’re as different as night and day in my opinion.
While ice cream is made from cream, frozen yogurt, as its name suggests, is made from yogurt. Surprise right? By definition ice cream must contain at least ten percent fat to be called ice cream and the higher quality of the ice cream, the higher the fat content it will have. Frozen yogurt has much less fat content, depending on the fat content of the yogurt you choose to make it with.
Is frozen yogurt a health food? It does contain probiotics and a healthy dose of carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins, all in a larger quantity than ice cream. And let’s not forget frozen yogurt’s decent measure of available calcium in every bite. If that makes it health food for you, I won’t disagree.
There is also lots of discussion around frozen yogurt and lactose intolerance. While the fermentation process of frozen yogurt may quite possibly reduce the amount of lactose in the final product, it may or may not help those with lactose intolerance digest frozen yogurt better than ice cream.
Regardless of the reasons you’re choosing to enjoy a bowl of frozen yogurt, this recipe guarantees a very delicious outcome any way you look at it!
Ingredients You’re Going to Need for this Frozen Strawberry Dessert
Luckily the ingredient list is small for strawberry frozen yogurt. It doesn’t take much to make a delicious bowlful.
- frozen strawberries – make sure these are unsweetened. You can also use fresh strawberries, but they must be frozen solid first.
- whole milk plain Greek yogurt – you can use any fat content you want, but I prefer the mouthfeel of the frozen yogurt made with whole fat yogurt.
- honey – I prefer clover honey for this recipe, you could also use agave, but remember agave tastes sweeter.
- pure vanilla extract
- table salt – just a pinch
How to Make Frozen Yogurt (It’s so easy.)
You’ll want to make sure you have a high-powered blender or even a large-capacity food processor that easily crushes through frozen fruit to have success with this recipe.
Because it will only take about ten minutes of your time to make this frozen yogurt, you’re going to be sitting down with a bowl before you know.
Start with adding all listed ingredients to the bowl of your blender (or food processor) and process until smooth and creamy. You might need to tamp it down or scrape the sides of the bowl for it to process completely.
You can enjoy this frozen yogurt immediately after you make it, it will have a soft serve consistency. Or transfer it to a freezer safe container and freeze for about an hour for it be be more hardened.
This will keep for about a month in the freezer, but I can’t imagine waiting that long to finish it!

Make Frozen Yogurt with Whole Milk Yogurt
For some this seems counterintuitive since frozen yogurt is deemed a “healthy treat” and whole milk yogurt does add to the calorie count. However, fat content is vital when it comes to making a non-icy version of frozen yogurt.
And let’s not forget, whole-milk yogurt is much less of an indulgence than the eggs and cream you’ll find in regular ice cream. I think it’s a fair trade off.
If you don’t really care about calories or the “healthy treat” aspect of frozen yogurt, feel free to add a bit a cream (1/8 cup) if you’re looking for a very creamy version of this dessert.

Best Container for Freezing Frozen Yogurt
Something shallow and wide, like an 9 x 5 baking pan.
Not only does this allow for a quicker freezing time, it allows for a long runway when it comes to scooping the perfect rounded bite. Remember, since frozen yogurt is not as creamy as ice cream, it is going to be more icy, long and shallow scoops are what you want.
Regardless of container, leaving the ice cream on the counter before scooping will also help melt some the present ice crystals and give way to “prettier” scoops. And don’t forget my favorite ice cream scoop.
