On Saturday August 16, Jarden Home Brands will host the first annual International Can-It-Forward Day with special guest renowned chef and Bravo’s Top Chef judge, Hugh Acheson! my favorite thing to can is watermelon rinds. peeling the skin off a watermelon and cubing the rind is a labor of love but it makes an awesome sweet pickle. my friends and family save their rinds for me, and i love that it i can make this treat from what would otherwise have been trash (or hopefully compost). if you haven’t made it before make sure you give some to your grandparents and great aunties and uncles; mine just light up to have a jar of this long forgotten summer treat from their childhood.

HOLY MOLY!!! i’m deep in the canning season right now, and this being my first year, i sure could use EVERYTHING in this prize pack. right now though my favorite thing to can are my heirloom brandywines. i’ve been making every concoction known to man with them. right now i have a bushel i pureed simmering on the stove that i am turning into all purpose pizza sauce! a little parmesan, oregano, basil, garlic, sugar, salt, red pepper flakes, onion and BAM!! heaven. i had a party last night that i pulled a batch out from last week a simmered italian sausages in all day. the best sausage subs EVER!

I love making strawberry jam, as well as other fruit jams! Learned from helping my mother in the 1950’s. I also like to can tomatoes and pickles. We had a big family and an even bigger family garden! My parents grew everything from tomatoes to raspberries! We had apple, peach, and pear trees in the backyard. Dad would make a trip to downtown Cincinnati to the cattle stockyard every Spring and bring home a big garbage can full of cow maure. Our veggies and zinnias were HUGE !
