I’m thankful for my parents. I am 21 years old and this past February I finally found the strength to admit to them that I’ve been suffering from depression for about 10 years. Before this, I had not told a single person what was truthfully going on. In June, I was diagnosed with Dysthimia and have recently started going to therapy twice a week. While my parents are both in medicine, psychology and mental health are very new to them. Their love and patience has kept me going through my two steps forward, and my ten steps back, whether it’s dropping out of school, quitting my jobs, or even finding it hard to have strength to get out of bed in the morning. Being so young and suffering from depression, I feel very alone and alienated, especially from my siblings and friends. Their commitment, love, and support frequently feels like the only thing keeping me from giving up this seemingly endless battle. Every day is a hurdle, and without them I would not be here.

Although many have taken on this burden with worried hearts and limited resources, I have seen countless families working to overcome hardship in order to survive and provide for their grandchildren. I became a Social Worker knowing I wouldn’t make money. I became a Social Worker to help others and I can honestly say that they’ve helped me more than they’ll ever know… They’re given me more than any paycheck will ever give me. Family is an amazing word- it has so many meanings. I’m just glad to say that I have been privileged to see a new definition of the world “family”.

Four years ago I had cancer. Surgery took it away, but I always had to go back every six months for tests to make sure it had not returned. This May I received a call from my doctor, telling me to see an oncologist because something was spotted near my liver. I did what he suggested, even though I just wanted to bury my head and forget about it. After many appointments, tests and sleepless nights, I finally was informed that it was not cancer again. I have never felt so grateful! So this year, I’m grateful for a new lease on my life to spend with my wonderful husband, sons and family and friends everywhere!
