Serendipity 3 reminds of a place you would celebrate your sweet sixteen. A glorified malt shop with faux Tiffany lamps, long lines, marginal service and so-so food. However, they won’t let you make a reservation for just dessert…you have to eat a meal. So we would eat….just to get dessert.
There is only one reason I patronized Serendipity 3…for the Frozen Hot Chocolate. It’s out of this world.
Served in a very large bowl-dish-mug thingy with a straw or two…it’s over the top delicious. Thoughts of this amazing dessert-drink have crossed my mind over the years so imagine my excitement when I came across Serendipity 3’s recipe for Frozen Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate.
Try not to think too hard about how contradictory the words “frozen hot chocolate” sound…just embrace it.
These pictures almost appear pudding-like but trust me, you can put a straw right in and slurp it up.
The best part of this recipe remains that the peanut butter is not a wimpy background flavor. It’s right there, partnering with the chocolate, in full-fledged peanut buttery goodness. It’s sublime.
You have to make this…
Here’s what you will need: Milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, semisweet chocolate, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa, whole milk, whipping cream and peanut butter. Ingredients not shown: Ice
Place 6-1/2 ounces of assorted chocolate in a medium metal bowl. Set bowl over saucepan of simmering water; stir until melted and smooth.
Add 3 Tablespoons sugar and 1 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder to the melted chocolate. Stir to blend. Gradually whisk in 1/2 cup milk until a smooth mixture is achieved. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.
With an electric mix, beat 1/2 cup chilled whipping cream until peaks form.
Place remaining 1 cup milk, chocolate mixture, 3 Tablespoons peanut butter and 3 cups ice cubes in a blender. Make sure to add the ice to the blender last so it doesn’t lock up the blades.
Divide between two large glasses and top with whipped cream. Sprinkle with crushed chocolate espresso beans or chocolate shavings.
You have to try this, you just have to.
Make sure to keep the bowl of extra whipped cream handy.
You never know when you are going to need more!

We go to NY about once a year.
I think I know where I taking my husband for dessert on our next trip.
I am saving this recipe too!
Yum.

Oh my! There is nothing better then the combination of peanut butter and chocolate! My mom used to make us peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches. Mmmmm … the memories. đŸ™‚
Amber says
I am up for work in a bit. If I were awake enough I could make this, but I would probably forget the lid to the blender or sugar or something. Zzzzzzz. I am so glad you are posting this recipe, there is a bakery here who makes a version, but something is lacking even though I have never been to Serendipity. Now that I read your ingredients it looks like a few things are lacking.
Lisa@The Cutting Edge of Ordinary says
Oh boy that’s a dessert for me! Yum!
ellyn says
Flea sent me over to check your chocolate dessert. That looks so yummy. I will be trying it very soon.

You said that “purely hedonistic” statement like it was a bad thing. I’m right there with you. LOL Planning a trip to NYC in November and I’ll be doing all the same things you do and loving every moment of it. Tourism supports the city, you know? đŸ™‚
I remember seeing the frozen hot chocolate on Oprah, too. I wanted it then, but didn’t get to try it. I like the idea of this peanut butter version. Oh my. Serendipity … indeed.

Ohhhhh my goodness Cath, you are simply wonderful. I am so trying this. Everytime we go to nyc we always forget going there and regret it once we’re home.

Looks evil. I ran across some Serendipity Frozen Hot Chocolate mix at Home Goods and ran home and made it…delish!
curlywurlygurly says
yum! i was in the city yesterday…i took my 17-year-old cousin to peanut butter & co, a restaurant in the village that serves up ONLY peanut butter sandwiches (and variations thereof). i had the ‘lunchbox classic’ and she had pb & chocolate chips with reeses pieces.
then we walked up to ‘abracadabra’, a magic and costume shop because my cousin is an aspiring magician. she spent 2 happy hours getting tips from the pros and i bought her a bunch of tricks for her birthday. đŸ™‚
seriously, though…for a foodie like you, you should break out of the ‘tavern on the green’ box. there are so many restaurants better than that. đŸ™‚
Steph says
Wow, that looks delicious! It reminds me of the movie, which I watched so many times. I would love to try one of these. Yummy!

My husband saw me checking out your blog and asked if I was checking out a little food porn before church on Sunday morning. LOL. It made me laugh so I thought you might get a kick out of it too. Honestly, the fact that he thought anything with whipped cream on it would qualify as food porn is a testament to how yummy that looks. đŸ™‚

I was in NYC for the first time ever two times last year and didn’t make it to Serendipity. What was I thinking?!! I knew about the frozen hot chocolate. Ever since I heard about the rodent infestation at Serendipity, I decided not to ever go to that place. I still remained curious about the frozen hot chocolate. I’m so glad you posted this recipe. Now I don’t ever have to go! YUM!
Rachel (S[d]OC) says
I don’t blame you for doing the touristy stuff in NY. It’s there to be seen. It’s like when I made my first trip to London a few years ago on business where I spent all of my free time browsing the major sites and museums. I came back and a far-more well-traveled friend heard about it she said, “Why didn’t you tell me you were going? I would have told you all kinds of cool places where the tourists never go.” I said, “But I wanted to go where the toursts go. They go there for a reason!”
I haven’t had a frozen hot chocolate since high school. It was the night of my senior prom actually where we went to Serendipity for a post-prom snack. You have me missing them now. Maybe I need to make another late night/early morning trip. If I really have a craving, there is a chocolate store down the street from me that does a reasonably good facsimilie.
Or I could just make my own, as you have instructed here.
Culinarywannabe says
Keep on making this sucker at home, but please don’t venture back to Serendipity! I’ll let this explain it… http://wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15990. Yuk!

So many delicious peanut dishes, and too allergic to enjoy them! This sounds so perfect, it makes me sad (but lucky you!!!)

This looks great. I’ve always wanted to try Serendipity 3, but I tried to go last year and they were shut down by the health department for some pretty serious violations. Haven’t attempted to go again since they’ve reopened.
