On Saturday August 16, Jarden Home Brands will host the first annual International Can-It-Forward Day with special guest renowned chef and Bravo’s Top Chef judge, Hugh Acheson! A day to celebrate home canning, International Can-It-Forward Day allows food enthusiasts to connect via a variety of online and in-person activities.

New and experienced canners can participate in a live webcast, taking place on ground in Brooklyn Borough Hall Farmers Market, filled with canning demos where viewer questions will be answered in real-time by Chef Acheson and other experts while they learn the most popular (and delicious) home canning recipes. Twenty five farmers markets across the country will also be hosting Can-It-Forward Day celebrations!

In addition to the canning demos, there will also be segments on crafting, herb gardening and the brand’s new drinkware line! We will also be attempting a Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Mason Jar Mosaic.

To celebrate and for your support of this awesome event, Jarden Home Brands is offering this amazing giveaway of all kinds of cool stuff! I hope you win!!

The New Limited Edition Spring Green Heritage Collection Jars: These limited edition jars commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Ball brothers’ “Perfection” Jar and come in a beautiful green tint. These are being produced only in 2014 and are available in both pint and quart varieties. We would offer a case of each size for review and also for giveaway.

Fresh Herb Keeper: Many new to gardening start with herbs as an easy first step. To savor the seasonings, Ball has developed a new product to keep herbs fresh for up to two weeks.

Dry Herb Jars: A perfectly-sized solution for storing your dried herbs. Great for storing seasonings, spices and rubs too! Stackable, low-profile design makes pantry or drawer storage more efficient than old, mis-matched containers.

Frozen Herb Starters: Preserve your fresh seasonings in ready to use cubes filled with butter, oil or other liquid for easy and flavorful meal starters.

5 Blade Herb Scissors: Stainless steel blades to gently cut and evenly slice herbs like basil, parsley and cilantro. (Retail value: $9.99)

Ball Blue Book (not shown): Offering 125 pages that will guide you while you learn about preserving, this book provides information on equipment, instructions for the preserving method and recipes!

Raspberry jam. As a child, my grandmother and great-grandmother always made the jams for the family. I would pick raspberries and blueberries for them in the summer and hang around in the kitchen while they cooked the berries. My favorite childhood memories involve these two remarkable women who were a big influence in my life. My great-grandmother’s house always smelled of berries and apple pie. My heart sings when I think of them.

my favorite thing to can is watermelon rinds. peeling the skin off a watermelon and cubing the rind is a labor of love but it makes an awesome sweet pickle. my friends and family save their rinds for me, and i love that it i can make this treat from what would otherwise have been trash (or hopefully compost). if you haven’t made it before make sure you give some to your grandparents and great aunties and uncles; mine just light up to have a jar of this long forgotten summer treat from their childhood.

If its too sweet for you, their is an awesome sweet and sour watermelon rind recipe that is equally delicious.

I love making strawberry jam, as well as other fruit jams! Learned from helping my mother in the 1950’s. I also like to can tomatoes and pickles. We had a big family and an even bigger family garden! My parents grew everything from tomatoes to raspberries! We had apple, peach, and pear trees in the backyard. Dad would make a trip to downtown Cincinnati to the cattle stockyard every Spring and bring home a big garbage can full of cow maure. Our veggies and zinnias were HUGE !
