If you are anything like me, you too have always been skeptical of a cleanse. Very skeptical. First of all, I didn’t really understand the point of doing one or if there was some medical benefit I was missing. I couldn’t imagine replacing food with juice for any amount of days (I’d starve, right?). Why would I ever want to do that? It’s easy to be closed minded about things like starving or just being hungry.
However, I have lots and lots of friends who have done cleanses and repeated them several times during the year. In fact, these friends are always on board to do another one. These are not people I consider “health fanatics” or ones who follow crazy diets, having to test out the latest food fad. These are friends whose opinions I trust. And I would always ask them why they were doing it (cleansing).
Everyone always had a different reason, from it makes them feel good or they wanted to cut back on eating. The sentiments were never compelling, but they were definitely deriving benefit from their cleanse. It always left me curious. Was I missing something? I assumed the stuff tasted awful anyway.
Well, last September I attended the International Food Blogger’s Conference (IFBC) in Seattle where I met the Suja Juice folks. Suja was a sponsor of this amazing conference I love attending every year. If you are a food blogger, I highly recommend going!
Anyway, many sponsors bring their products to this event so attendees can try them first hand. At the time, I had not heard of Suja Juice. They are mainly sold individually at Whole Foods or online as a cleanse. I tried a few of the flavors they had available and they were really good.
The juices are cold-pressed, 100% organic with no preservatives. They are healthy drinks with lots of nutritional value. I wish I lived near a Whole Foods Market where I could get these more often…but I don’t. Lucky for me, Suja offered a 3-Day Cleanse to the bloggers in attendance of IFBC. There it was again…the mention of a cleanse.
It took me several months to take them up on their offer, I still didn’t know if this was something I wanted/could do. I talked with more friends about it and they reiterated how they still loved doing these short juicing sessions. For them it was a reset of their body and many spoke of the energy they felt while helping them control their appetites before they went on a diet. Hmmm, good idea.
I decided I would try it and see if it was real or hype. I was terrified of being hungry. There is nothing worse than working with food all day and having to cook for your family when you are starving. I also believed I would be spending lots of time in the bathroom or couldn’t leave the house. I think you know what I mean. None of that happened by the way.
Now, full disclosure…a lot of people do cleanses to lessen their cravings for sugar or caffeine or many other reasons. I am a black coffee drinker, 2-3 cups a day. I rarely drink soda or other sugary drinks. Most/many people do not drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks while they cleanse and Suja does not recommend it. However, I drank my 2 cups of black coffee every morning. If I used cream and sugar in coffee I would have left it out. But for me, black coffee was okay. I have no intention of giving that up for any reason and it’s calorie free. I felt it was my decision to make that call. Some people do experience headaches during cleanses that might be related to caffeine withdrawal, however I did not have any of that.
Overall I felt really, really good during my 3-Day cleanse. I was so surprised. I drank my six daily juices between 9 AM and 7 PM, opening a new one every two hours. I. Was. So. Full. Honestly, I forced myself to finish them and not because they tasted bad…they were SO filling. But, I finished them because the 6 juices are around a 1200-calorie daily diet. Eating less than that would put my body in starvation mode…not good. Therefore I finished them. I think this is important. You will not be hungry, at least I wasn’t. In fact, the only time I experienced hunger was the morning I was waiting to have my first 9 AM juice. After my second one…I was satisfied.
I did cook for my family and my blog during the cleanse and lacked any strong temptation of eating. It was so darn convenient to drink my meals. It made my life so easy during that time.
I lost four pounds during the cleanse, however this is not a weight loss program. When you go back to solid food, you are going to gain some of that weight back immediately. However, this 3-Day Cleanse would be an amazing prelude to the beginning of a healthy eating plan. After the cleanse you will be satisfied to eat much smaller quantities. What a great way to start off the year and a new you!!
Did I have a favorite flavor? Yes! But let me qualify that, the Vanilla Cloud juice made with coconut meat, honey and all kinds of yummy, was of course a favorite. It is your daily reward for juicing, it’s dessert. It’s amazing. But from the regular juices, the carrot-orange was my other fave. I loved the clean and refreshing flavor and looked forward to it every day. And, I did not dislike any of them, but I am not a picky eater.
Anyway, I would love for you to try this product and I hope you are the winner! You will have to have room in your fridge for 18-bottles of 16 oz juices…they must be kept cold and will be delivered to your door packed in ice.
