Three…Squared

How did you go from baby boobies...

To cutie...in nine short years?

How are you possibly nine years old today?  I have no idea where the time has gone.  Cliché but true.

The little boy who followed me around, asking only, "Wha ya doin' Mama? Doin' Mama?", over and over and over again.  It made me crazy then, but what I wouldn't do now to hear the scratchy little voice of toddler hood ask me that same question again.

Now we speak of fractions, geometry, politics, elections and wars.  Your awareness of the world around you startles me, as the innocence of your childhood slips away quickly in this age of information.

I watch you soar and spread your wings a little more each year.

You bring so much to my life and to this world.

May you remain as happy as you are today.

Happy Birthday little man.  I love you.

Mom.

I thought growing up myself was scary, but seeing my children grow up startles me more……the cliche is so true…time waits for no man so it is best we spend as much of it with our little ones.
    Happy birthday “little Noble Pig”!!!

  2. Happy Birthday to your handsome young man! You brought tears to my eyes. I always long for the days of freedom to come with all my cherubs running around, but I am sure I will miss them when they no longer want me so to speak. Thanks for the reminder. I have to go get a tissue, excuse me.

  4. I know it is probably cliche’, but the song SUNRISE, SUNSET speaks so appropriately of this growing up of our children. So quickly….then they are grown with children of their own.

    Happy Birthday to your Hooligan!

  5. Barbie with a T 5

He seems like one of the nicest hooligans I have ever known. He has your smile. Happy Birthday young man.

  6. Julia 6

Happy Birthday! Sounds like he’s growing up to be a very interesting person too!

  7. Happy birthday, handsome little guy!!!

  8. Oh, they do grow like that, don’t they. Startling. My daughter will be nine in a couple months. I had to ask her yesterday because surely that was wrong.

    Happy Birthday to yours!

  9. Rindy R 10

My little Jensen just turned 9 in February – and I thought the same thing minus the world events, war and politics and add shopping, girlfriends and wanting cell phones!

  10. It’s amazing, isn’t it? I had to chuckle at your memory of him following you around like that. My “little” boy is now nearly 22 years old and instead of asking mom what she’s doing, he’s asking his girlfriend. Same thing; different woman. All heartbreakingly cute nonetheless. Happy birthday to the Noble Piglet!

  11. ER's Mom 12

Blink of an eye, I tell you. My daughter will be 9 in a couple of months…

It is a beautiful sight watching her grow into a young lady. I’m sure you feel the same about your hooligans.

  12. Marlene 13

Cathy, this brought tears to my eyes. I’ve been wondering lately, how they could have gotten away from me so fast while I was busy with everyday life. It’s so bittersweet, isn’t it?

    Happy Birthday to Hooligan #1!

  16. Cathy, wait ’till her turns 19!!! My twins hit 19 this past Feb and it was just amazing that those years flew by so quickly.

I’m embracing every single aspect of the Little Imp’s fleeting toddlerhood and tributes like this not only bring tears to my eyes, but make me want to hold on only that much tighter.

Happy Birthday to your Hooligan #1!!

  17. I can relate to the year flying by. And I dont’ like it any more than you.
    Happy Birthday, Hooligan!

  18. Katrina 19

Happy birthday – I think he’s definitely moving from cute to very handsome in a hurry. It gets even scarier to watch one’s grandkids hit these milestones ;)

  22. dawn 23

He is so going to hate you for the whole baby boobies thing in about 15 years! LOL

  23. Louise 24

Wonderful! Seeing other mother’s loving their children, makes my heart happy. I have a pillow in the living room from my own kids that shows “as long as there are Mothers, there will be love in the world”.

  30. Darling photos – I second that thought, Happy Birthday…..!

Happy birthday to your son! What a cute baby picture.

He’s a handsome hooligan, he is! Happy Birthday…to him, and to you. :)
(Never quite understood why it’s not the mom celebrated on that day…but as moms suppose we are more than happy to celebrate our offspring. Birthday bubbles heading his way soon! :) )

  33. Sheila 34

Oh, how bitter sweet. I can relate. I cried when my youngest was two weeks old because I knew he wouldn’t be that small for long (and due to hormones I am certain). Happy birthday to your young man!

  34. Shawn 35

Awww, there’s just something about boys. My youngest son just turned 10 and my older son is about to turn 12. It was just yesterday that they had their own little baby boobies and rubber band wrists. :::sigh:::

  35. Marcy 36

Oh he was a chubby little thing wasn’t he? but now he is growing into such a sweet looking young man:)) You grow’em good Cathy! Your kids are adorable!

  36. Elyse 37

  38. What a sweet post! Happy birthday to your guy!

  39. Lisa 41

Happy Birthday! The thing about cliches is that there is truth there. Believe me, you blink, and then he’ll be fifteen. Enjoy every moment.

  40. LilSis 42

What a cutie! I hope he has a great birthday! It seems the older they get, the faster time flies! It seems like my baby boy was just a toddler yesterday; now he’s 15 and is taller than me. It’s so fun to watch them turn into young men, but it’s really sad, too. We’ll be empty nesters in only three short years! (sniffle, sniffle)

  41. dawn 43

Oh my word he is a handsome little guy. Happy Birthday to you cutie pie.

  42. Pam 44

Such a cute baby has turned into a handsome boy. Can you believe how fast time flies. Happy birthday to your little man.

  43. Wishing him a very Happy Birthday!!

I don’t know why time has to go by so quickly–it’s not fair!!

  44. Kelli 46

3-21-00. I will never, ever forget that awesome birthdate you gave him! Happy Birthday Older Hooligan, you are growing into such a handsome man!

  47. Dana 49

I love the moobs (man boobs)! My two year old still has them and they make me laugh every time I take his shirt off. I am trying to savor every moment with him as I know it all goes by so fast. Congrats on having a big boy!

  48. kiki 50

He’s so handsome! What a great young man.

Hope he has a great birthday!

  53. Laurie 55

Happy Birthday to Hooligan #1, although he looks a whole lot more like a handsome young man than a hooligan these days. You must be so proud. Hope your celebration was wonderful!

  54. Mary 56

A Happy Birthday to you both. He’s going to be a hunk soon, Cathy.

  55. My neighbor has identical twin boys I know since they are 3 and 4 pounds. They are now 18 months and I’m more in love with them every day. I helped teach them to walk and now to talk. I’ve taken hundreds of pictures of them and feel like they immediately won my heart and became a very important part of my life. Each day they are rapidly changing and I look back at their pictures and think “oh my the time is going so fast. Have to appreciate this moment right now because this babbling is going to be long sentences and then we’ll miss the babbling.

I love this post. It made me teary eyed.

  56. Aw…happy birthday to your adorable piglet!

    He’s a lucky kid because he’s so well-fed!

  57. Philly 59

Your kids are adorable, love that baby picture !!

  58. Our D is 9 too. It is SHOCKING how fast it grows. Great pics!

  59. Kate 61

What I wouldn’t give to hear that little voice asking me “whatcha doin’ mommy?” one more time. So sweet!!!

  60. Mama Goose 62

How sweet. Baby boobies. He’s gonna love you for that some day.
Happy (belated) Birthday to you both.

  61. Well look who shares a birthday with me! When I was born…all those years ago it was the first day of Spring. My Mom called me her bundle of spring joy. Awww. Cute huh? Happy Birthday to your bundle of joy!

  62. Alanna 64

This brought tears to my eyes, it is so very sweet! I can’t wait to have one of my own!!!! Happy birthday, little man! :)

  67. Paula 70

What a handsome young man you’ve got there! Just today, I asked my 9 year old if we could skip her birthday and keep her 9 forever! Uh, the answer was no. Isn’t it amazing just how amazing they are?! Happy birthday wishes to your little man! :-)

  68. tipper 71

So sweet! He is a cutie pie!!

  69. BigSis 72

What a precious post. It reminds me of when my nephews were little guys. They’re incredible bigger guys now, but I still miss the cute little things they would say and do when they were teeny. I have all those little snapshots in my head…
